FAQs
Questions before you begin.
Practical answers for owners and authorized company representatives exploring data licensing.
How much could our records be worth?
There is no standard price. Content, depth, usability, rights available, and buyer interest all affect value. We assess potential fit before pursuing buyer discussions; an assessment is not a guaranteed valuation or offer.
Does a license mean selling our company’s data outright?
A license grants defined rights to use specified records. You keep your original records. Permitted uses, duration, exclusivity, sharing rights, and future updates are matters to agree in the contract.
Are we allowed to license these records?
That needs review. Ownership, customer agreements, software terms, information about individuals, and other obligations can affect the records available to license. Your counsel reviews the relevant authority and restrictions.
What happens to sensitive information?
The agreement must define exclusions, required de-identification, and who performs and verifies the work. De-identification reduces identification risk; it should not be treated as a promise that no identification is possible.
Does Copper Key access our systems or hold our records?
No. We handle the commercial representation. We start with descriptions of your records; extraction and preparation responsibilities are agreed with the buyer.
How much work will our team need to do?
The initial assessment needs basic information and a conversation. Later work depends on the systems and proposed delivery. Seller responsibilities should be clear before you agree to a license.
How long does a transaction take?
Timing varies with buyer interest, diligence, rights review, approvals, and delivery requirements. We discuss practical next steps as the opportunity develops rather than promise a fixed closing date.
Can you help with an existing offer?
Yes. We can assess and negotiate its commercial terms under an agreed engagement. Your counsel reviews the legal agreement.
What if our company is closing or in bankruptcy?
Retained records may warrant review, but access and authority need to be established. For bankruptcy estates, the authorized representative and counsel determine the applicable requirements and approvals.
Do we have to accept an offer?
No. The decision remains with the authorized seller. Our role is to help evaluate and negotiate the commercial opportunity.
What if no deal closes?
No Copper Key success fee is due. Independent counsel and any separately agreed specialist services have their own costs.
Who pays Copper Key?
The seller pays our agreed success fee from covered licensing proceeds when received. We accept no compensation or referral payments from buyers.
Is licensing a one-time payment or ongoing revenue?
It can cover an existing set of records, future updates, or an agreed ongoing arrangement. Scope and payment are negotiated for each opportunity.
